    I hope I have a question that can be answered. I have two littermates that have both been neutered. I live currently on the second floor and let them out on the balcony. In about a month I am moving to a downstairs apt. My plan is to hopefully figure out some way to let them outside without them just going wild and not come back. My first idea is to get a big doggie sized kennel and hooking it to the door so they can see the yard and inside the house but nothing else. I hope someone has good ideas or say my idea is the cats meow!! Thank you!

    Well if they are able to escape is good for them in case something happens. It is the same for their collars in case they get caught.

    Such a nice video! I have a harness with no clips in the front. What steps do you recommend in this case ? (First head and then close the back?)

    • @kittycatgoadventures
      @kittycatgoadventures 11 днів тому

      Yes, you’d follow the same steps - practicing putting over the head first and then fastening the back, and then both. Many cats have a harder time with those types of harnesses though because they don’t like things going over their head. I’m not saying it’s not possible to train, just don’t be surprised if it takes longer to train that part. If your cat gets stuck on that step for a while without any forward progress, I’d recommend trying a different harness to train with.

    My cat will sprint suddenly after a squirrel causing the leash to pull on the harness. I guess I'll have to get a 30 foot or more leash. We just moved here last month so it's a risky situation and with busy highway right near my building. If he comes out of the harness I don't know if I'll see him again or if he gets hit by a car. I really enjoyed the video and now know to keep leash loose ...if he doesn't take off😂

    Do you have any suggestions for training a cat that isn't very food motivated? My cat doesn't over-eat so I just have a gravity feeder for her. She's never gone overweight and never really has been hugely interested in treats. She does like those liquid tube treats but they're expensive so I can't afford to get large amounts of them.

    • @kittycatgoadventures
      @kittycatgoadventures 29 днів тому

      You can try using catnip or toys as motivation. Those work well in some cases. Or canned wet food on a spoon. Most cats who are free-fed are not treat motivated though. Why would they work for treats when they can just walk over to the food bowl? In most cases, changing to scheduled meals fixes the food motivation issue.

    Thank you for a very informative session. As a foreigner and a cat guardian living in the UK I agree this country makes international travel with cats extremely difficult. We opted for bringing in our cat via a Pet Courier (van travel via Europe and the channel) and she was pretty traumatised by it. The conditions of ferry travel into Ireland also sound inhumane, so I am glad to hear that some better options are being introduced in terms of pet friendly cabins, although of course, like all pet friendly things, is an opportunity to milk the pet owners of money. And no, I don't think the practice of asking fro your pet to be doubly vaccinated against rabies, by not recognising a vaccine administered outside Europe, is ok at all, since this is a pretty taxing vaccine on the body, so it is not in the best interest of the cat,

    My Icarus wasnt loving the harness, chasing a laser pointer around made him forget he was wearing it in a flash 😜Just had him on a leash for first time, got a 15m extendable one, went to a cafe that has a little strip of grass and bushes next to it, let him play and it went ok.Found him under a year ago, right when my business season was starting, I have another boy and girl, almost 20 years old, my female would attack him, so he slept with me in a little box bed and lived in my car for just over a week while I worked, untill he opened his eyes. Then spent almost a month in my jacket pocket during the day, peaking out forr milk bottles and what comes after them. He´s not scared of the world, I need to teach him to come to me quick, just in case, before i take him out further, scrunching one of his favourite food pouches seems to be a summoning spell lol but would rather something else I could substitute this for, and he gets his tasty good boy pouch later. tried clicking my fingernails while dooing the pouch scrunching action but he loses interest fast. Thanks for what you do. Purrs be with you ;P

    Willow is making progress with her harness. Our problem now is that she tends to panic and run away when the treat is gone and I can’t catch her to release the harness. So we’re having trouble with the “walking around and being active with the harness on” phase. I have to buckle it for it to stay on, but when she runs away in a panic, we can’t get it off! Any suggestions? Willow and I thank you in advance.

My baby is only 4 months old but shes insanely curious so started harness training her, but I live in an apartment on the 9th floor so I dont feel good about taking her out there to explore. Is the hallway a decent option to use to train her by going out a few steps or should I take the plunge and go down the elevator to the outdoors?

    • @kittycatgoadventures
      @kittycatgoadventures 2 місяці тому

      I think starting in the hallway is a great way to work up to going outside. The hallway will be a new environment for your kitty to get used to, so start there and gradually work towards going outside.

    Tom Thumbs just had his 6th birthday and got his 4th harness, having outgrown the only one that fit him. We walk around block and parks at our suburb home, get out in the woods at our cabin. Always on his leash. Yes, he has his Catio at each location, along with a large enclosed backyard where he can practice his predatory skills chasing lizards and crickets. Safely walking a cat that WANTS to walk is what they need.

    • @kittycatgoadventures
      @kittycatgoadventures 2 місяці тому

      Treats definitely make training easier. It might be harder to reinforce things without them, but it’s not impossible. Play, catnip, or praise can work as a reward with training sometimes. Have you experimented with different treats? Like the squeezie treats (Churus, for example)? Also what is your cat’s feeding schedule? Are they free fed?

    • @gachamooncraft
      @gachamooncraft 2 місяці тому

      @@kittycatgoadventures yes, I have my cat unfortunately is the picky type with treats, I haven’t found the right one yet. She is free to feed whenever she gets hungry, but using catnip to help her get use to the harness is definitely helpful.😁

    • @kittycatgoadventures
      @kittycatgoadventures 2 місяці тому

      when a cat is free fed, it is a lot harder to find a treat they're willing to "work" for. Treats just don't have as much value when the cat has access to food whenever they want. If you want to increase your cat's food/treat motivation, switching to scheduled meals will definitely help!

    Hi, I just wanted to give an update, your advice is working!! My cat is becoming braver, less afraid of strangers, unfamiliar noises, and spaces!!! I am using the "1,2,3" pattern game, and I had a friend participate helping my cat acclimate to strangers. Today, my cat did not freak out at the sight of a stranger far away in the distance! And she quickly recovered from the elevator noises! I'm able to read her behavior better and work within her limits, being more patient and not pushing her too far. I'm so excited for the possibility of going on adventures with her, and I wanted to thank you so much for helping enrich my cats life and mine!

    Catios are the only way to go. Every cat I've ever had could escape a harness in 2 seconds flat. If you blink they're gone. You did a good job with this video in hopefully raising awareness that cat's anatomy makes escape proof harnesses a myth. I blame instagram for everyone thinking a cat needs to 'go on adventures'.

    • @kittycatgoadventures

    There is no such thing as an escape proof harness for cats. My cats can get out of everyone in less than 2 seconds. And it makes no difference at all where I am positioned. I've thought about rigging up my own using a onesie.

    My biggest issue is my cat doesn’t give a fuck about treats other then cheese and I obviously can’t give a ton of cheese. Also I worry my cat is super skidding and idk when I should be ok to bring him outside to test everything out. He was an outdoor cat for 11 years and has been indoor for just over a year and a half and idk if he is used to the outdoors or if he’ll associate it with running and freedom and go to escape immediately. If I was at my old house an escape is easy bc he’d just come home. But he’s moved twice now and I live in an apartment without access for him to simply roam back home if he could even find his way back at all. Using a leash outside is one thing I wanna do to help him understand where I live and to at least roam back and chill by the entrance if he somehow escaped my apartment. As of rn he’s got no shot. I really wanna give him a chance again to experience the outdoors because he loves it for a decade but I’m scared I’ll lose him forever if I mess something up.

      @kittycatgoadventures 3 місяці тому

      Have you experimented with the type of treat you offer? Most cats go nuts for those squeezie treats, like Churu or Catit Creamies. Your cat's eating habits can also greatly affect their desire for treats and willingness to train for treat rewards. If your cat free fed? If so, you might consider switching to scheduled meals. Most cats aren't going to be excited about or willing to "work" for treats when they can just walk over to their food bowl and get a snack anytime they want. As for introducing to the outside, that is definitely a gradual process. You should start by opening your back door (or whichever door of your home leads to the quietest area) and sitting inside the door with your cat on their harness and leash (this step happens after your cat is already fully accepting of the harness and leash). Then you gradually take a couple steps outside when your cat is ready, etc. I actually have a harness training course coming out in a couple weeks that goes through the harness training, leash training, and outdoor training process.

      Absolutely. Leash training is a whole other process. I’ve got a video for that too!

    My cat is scared of people or any loud noise from the city, so getting out the door of the apartment up until i can find a quiet corner for her to explore is very stressful for her. I wonder if the adventure is even beneficial in this case due to the amount of stress involved.

      You can work on desensitization by opening the door of your apartment and sitting just inside the door with her. Give treats and praise. You would continue this process until she gets more comfortable, and then you could try going through the door

      @kittycatgoadventures thank you for the reply. She likes exploring the corridor and rolls around on the floor, but she'll run inside the apartment after any noise and won't come out until they're gone. I can't picture how I can encourage her to be brave with treats but I'll try!

      @@cmleiteI had a cat behaviorist guest on my show last year, and he shared all kinds of tips for acclimating a cat to strangers and noises. I’d recommend watching that and trying out his suggestions. ua-cam.com/users/liveTBhcJWA3YkY?si=zFvgutZZQmFrzTGC
